Plows must maintain a sufficient speed and proximity to roadside obstacles in order to effectively remove snow from roadways. Mailboxes are occasionally damaged in this process.
Placing mailboxes in road right-of-way is a privilege granted as a convenience to property owners. If mailbox damage occurs due to a function of clearing or maintaining the roadway, it is the mailbox owner’s responsibility to take care of it.
While Town employees and contractors try to be as careful as possible, there is no way to effectively clear the roadways in winter without affecting any mailboxes. Heavy snows with higher moisture content often result in more mailboxes being affected than normal.
It is understood that a damaged mailbox represents an inconvenience to the owner but, as beautiful as winter is in northern Wisconsin, it does expose us to numerous potential inconveniences. The Town appreciates your understanding.
